2024 US deadlines to consider for 2023 US tax year

In the US, the tax year spans from January 1st to December 31st. Individuals subject to US tax laws must stay mindful of crucial filing deadlines throughout the tax period, regardless of their location globally. Here are some important dates for the 2023 US tax year: 

January 16, 2024: Deadline for paying the last installment of estimated income tax for 2023.  

March 5, 2024: Last day for making certain distributions from trusts under special rules.  

March 15, 2024: Deadline for S corporations and partnerships to file their tax returns for 2023. Also, the deadline for filing Form 3520-A for owners of foreign trusts.  

April 15, 2024: Deadline for filing individual federal income tax returns for 2023. For those living outside the US, the deadline is extended to June 16, 2024. Also, the deadline for filing US gift tax returns, paying the first installment of estimated taxes for 2024, and filing FBAR forms.  

June 17, 2024: Deadline for individuals living outside the US to file their federal income tax returns for 2023.  

September 16, 2024: Final deadline for S corporations, partnerships, and owners of foreign trusts to file their tax returns for 2023. Also, the deadline for paying the third installment of estimated taxes for 2024.

September 30, 2024: Final deadline for US trusts to file their tax returns for 2023.  

October 15, 2024: Final deadline for individuals living in the US to file their federal income tax returns for 2023. Also, the final deadline for filing FBAR forms and certain other tax forms related to foreign trusts and gifts.  

December 16, 2024: Final deadline for individuals living outside the US to file their federal income tax returns for 2023, if granted an extension.  

December 30, 2024: Last day for any tax planning for the year.  

December 31, 2024: Deadline for making UK (foreign) tax payments for Foreign Tax Credit purposes.  

Additionally, the standard due date for US Estate tax return Form 706 is 9 months after the decedent’s death, extendable by 6 months.
